Galah in the trees at NRCL

Laughing Kookaburra

The largest of the Kingfisher family, the Laughing Kookaburra has become a common site is bushland and suburban gardens alike. Also known as the 'Laughing Jackass' it is now best known by its aboriginal name.

Lotus Flower

Whilst not a native of Australia, the Lotus plant is becoming more common because of its edible seed pod (very popular in Chinese dishes) and its beautiful flowers. Indigenous to Afica and Asia, Lotus is also popular with farmers who use the plant for weed control in water supply dams.

Rainbow Lorikeet

From the Parrot family, the Rainbow Lorikeet is usually seen in flocks of up to 50 plus birds. These brightly coloured parrots are noisy chatterers and feed mainly on the nectar of flowers. In recent years these birds have greatly increased in number around the suburbs around Melbourne.

Mountain Ash

These magnificent trees have been known to grow up to 115 metres and are the tallest flowering plant in the world. Their straight trunks are used for building timber framed houses, although these days we are more concerned with preserving our beautiful Mountain Ash forestd for the benefit of the animals that live in these forests.

Brush Tailed Possum

The Brush Tailed Possum is a regular visitor to picnic grounds and has become very tame to Humans. You may even have possums living in your garden at home. They feed mainly on the nectar of flowering plants such as Silky Oak and Eucalypts.
